DUI vs DWI

The Differences Between

DUIs and DWIs

DWI stands for driving while intoxicated and DUI stands for driving under the influence. They are often used interchangeably throughout the country, but they are different. Both have to do with driving while you have alcohol in your bloodstream. Being charged with either can be life-changing because it can cause you to lose your driver’s license, carry hefty fines, and possibly jail time. It is important to understand the difference between the two though.

In the state of Tennessee, DUI is the criminal charge of driving with a blood-alcohol content of 0.08 or higher. This is reserved for individuals ages 21 and older. DWI, or driving while intoxicated, is the equivalent charge for those who are underage. As we mentioned before, these changes can be life-changing. If you are charged with either, you will want to hire a drunk driving attorney to represent you.
